Press Release
Jagrana Media Center (JMC) expresses its deep concern over the tragic and alarming incidents that have occurred due to the grave situation in the country. In this painful hour, we sincerely call upon all justice-human rights defenders, journalists, members of civil society, and the general public to remain calm, patient, and tolerant.
JMC strongly condemns the excessive use of force by state security agencies against the Gen-Z protesters who took to the streets. The incidents of baton charges, tear gas shelling, aerial firing, and live ammunition fire have resulted in the deaths of more than 19 people and injuries to hundreds.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the 34 deceased and pay sincere tribute to the departed souls. We also wish for the speedy recovery of the hundreds who were injured. JMC views this tragic loss of life due to state violence as a grave violation of human rights and expresses its profound sorrow at this difficult moment.
The protests by Gen-Z youth were organized against corruption, nepotism, misgovernance, and the recent restrictions imposed on social media. JMC would like to draw the serious attention of the state to the tragic consequences caused by the movement, which was aimed at protecting democratic rights, human rights, national sovereignty, freedom of expression, and the restoration of social justice in the country.
JMC also expresses its deep concern over the physical damage caused to Radio Jagrana 93.6 MHz, operated by the Center in Butwal, Rupandehi, Lumbini Province, during the nationwide protests and demonstrations on Bhadra 23 and 24.
Jagrana Media Center makes a heartfelt appeal to immediately conduct a high-level, impartial, and independent investigation into these grave incidents that took place across the country, to ensure accountability of the responsible authorities, guarantee the safety and security of all citizens, provide medical treatment to the injured protesters, offer prompt relief to the families of the deceased youth, and assess and deliver justice for the physical damages caused.
